Shifting Perspectives: Quality of Life Considerations in Older Persons with Dysphagia

The care of older persons with dysphagia is not a one size fits all formula. There are several complex processes that must be taken into consideration when evaluating and treating elderly persons with dysphagia. There is a gap in knowledge between the medical disciplines that work with this population as well, further complicating care. A team approach is essential, but is it always used? Considerations of goals of care, family values, religion, comorbidities, overall health, and patient preferences must be taken into account at any level of care, for any patient, but when the patient is elderly we also must consider the gap between what the family wants, what the patient may want/may have wanted, and best medical practices. This course is designed to educate about the complexities of decision-making in medical care for older persons with dysphagia. It will address the resources that are out there to assist families and medical professionals when making medical decisions. It will describe the ideal team approach and how that differs from real-world, everyday practice. Lastly, it will provide suggestions on how to bridge ethics with the wants and needs of patients, their families, and their medical team.
